Gartner Symposium ITxpo 2011 - Summary

Gartner Symposium ITxpo wrapped up on Thursday, October 20 in Orlando, FL.  My summary:

Key messages:
  • Key themes: cloud, mobile, social
  • Mobile is not an emerging trend - it's here today.  Media tablets are exploding
  • "Reimagine IT." Move to a "postmodern business" that takes advantage of cloud computing, social computing, big data, and mobile technologies
  • Think public cloud first
  • Disruption fuels innovation
  • Do more with less - IT budgets aren't increasing much
  • Role of the CIO is changing from service provider to leader.  Employees are taking more responsibilities for themselves (e.g. BYOD) and embracing the cloud
  • Six major strategic IT vendors: IBM, HP, Oracle, SAP, Microsoft, and Cisco; and two big disruptors: Apple and Google
  • Embrace "customer delight, customer involvement, and customer intimacy."
  • Cloud brokers: Manage multiple cloud services as individual end-using companies can’t afford to do the cloud services integration themselves. Just a few small companies in this space at the moment but look for IBM and others to enter

My responsibilities at the conference:
  • Working at the IBM booth answering enterprise mobility questions.  I received the most number of questions on mobile strategy, policy, security, mobile applications (web, native, hybrid, virtual), smartphones, tablets, mobile device management, support (including self-service), mobile device management (MDM), mobile enterprise application platform (MEAP), social computing, business analytics, cloud, enterprise application stores, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
  • Delivering a 20 minute presentation on "The New Workplace: Unleashing the power of enterprise mobility"
  • Meeting with customers and vendors one-on-one
  • Attending conference sessions of interest
