Communicate with IBM employees via Sametime 7.5
Earlier this year, we announced the ability for customers to chat with IBM employees via the Sametime Connect client in addition to the browser-based client. Since Sametime Connect 7.5 has now shipped, we've expanded this capability to include the new client. One of the features of Sametime Connect 7.5 is the ability to log into two communities at the same time. This would allow a customer to log in to both their corporate Sametime server as well as IBM's in order to communicate with IBM employees. To configure 7.5:
1. Add new community, extst.ibm.com, via File - Preferences. Enter your IBM.com user id and password (IBM Registration)

Click on the server tab and enter the host server "extst.ibm.com" and change the community port from 1533 to 80

Click the icon on the toolbar to log in

One you are logged in, you can add IBM employees to your buddylist using their e-mail address. Be sure to select "External Contact" since the extst.ibm.com community is connected to messaging.ibm.com via the Sametime SIP/SIMPLE gateway

I login to the External IBM ST server and have followed the setup but every id (ibm employee email address) I attempt to use including yours says that the ID can't be found.

@1 I experienced the same thing but when I clicked the Add button at the bottom Contacts were added just the same and by using a local IBMer's ID (I'm in NZ - most potential contacts would be asleep when I can test ;-) I was able to see that they were Online - i.e. the Contact worked.
However, re-testing today I can't login to the server at all (just a Try Again message). If I try and browse to the server I get Error 500 with [code=SERVER_RESPONSE_CLOSE]. I'm guessing this is a security block but I'm not sure.
Not a biggie for me - I can always use the telephone ;-)

Yes you're right. You don't do a lookup. Just type the e-mail address correctly and click Add.
Note for IBM users: when you add people add them as external contacts using the ext.ibm.com server community and most importantly - note that you must add a .ibm.ext at the end of the email address. So sadly@gmail.com would become sadly@gmail.com.ibm.ext
I have not had a problem with server uptime. Note that if you are using the Java client you're limited to basic text. And if you use the Sametime 7.5 Gold client to connect as an external user to IBM that there may very likely be formatting issues for rich-text. This is because IBMers are already on "Gold+1" where the audio, rich text and other items are enhanced beyond the Gold release.

Hi, just recently I cannot see the online status of IBM employees that I used to be able to. I cannot send messages to them. This has happened recently. Also the availability of the IBM extst server has been very intermittent.
Secondly SameTime 7.5 client does not work using the HTTP proxy derived from my Internet Explorer settings. SameTime Connect v3 works fine.

Thanks Peter. There have been a number of issues IBM's Sametime infrastructure in recent week which has caused service interruptions. The problems have been corrected and service has been restored.

My team and I have been experiencing the same issue as Peter recorded ("cannot see the online status of IBM employees that I used to be able to. I cannot send messages to them."). This has occurred frequently over the last 2 weeks. You noted in your response to Peter that service has been restored and I found that to be true for the day of Tuesday December 19th (yesterday) and now today there seems to be another service interruption. Can you confirm if the service is up or down and do you know if there is a help desk that I can contact to log issues such as this one? Thanks in advance.

I used this service for a period, but then it suddenly would work anymore.
I tried again today, but the same problem occured.
This is very sad, as this was a really good service.

I am an ibm contractor, currently outsourced to a major customer, for a while now i have been using the ext. community and sametime 7.5 as a handy to tool to talk to my ibm colleague's (no ibm laptops are being used here by our team).
However, since a while i have a new collegue who is also using the ext community, but we ran into a small problem....
Appareantly it is not possible for 2 ext users to talk to eachother ? I can add him, and vice versa he can add me, but neither of us get a request to accept , and neither appears online ...
Is this a "feature", or are we overlooking something ? (we tried both with the user@domain.tld and with user@domain.tld.ext.ibm, als specified in the post of Grant Bingham.

I cannot for the life of me see what is wrong. I cannot log in to Sametime using the Java Connect client via { Link } but when I try to log in using the embedded Sametime client I cannot do it. Also I cannot re-login using the Java connect client. Only the initial launch will log me in.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

Are you getting an error message? There are three options:
1. Log in using the browser client
2. Log in from the Notes 8 client with embedded Sametime (remember to change the port from 1533 to 80 and use extst.ibm.com)
3. Log in from the Sametime Connect 7.5.1 client (remember to change the port from 1533 to 80 and use extst.ibm.com)
In all cases, you'll need to log in with your IBM Registration id/password

I have the same problem as #12.
I was using this feature for more than year and than suddenly it disappears. Some of my collegues are still able to log in, but most of as are not allowed. The error message is ...due incorrect logon...
First we though that old IBM ids are not supported anymore, but I still have collegues with those who successfully logon.
Please, help us to get the service back as it give us unmatched collaboration level with IBM office.

There is a known issue with intermittent awareness issues (users showing offline when they are online). In some cases, logging out and logging back in addresses the problem. A plan to upgrade IBM's older SIP/SIMPLE gateways to the newer IBM Lotus Sametime Gateway is under development and it is believed that this will address the problem

Christopher, I am very interested in your comment regarding the upgrade of the IBM SIP/SIMPLE gateways to the newer IBM Lotus Sametime Gateway. Could you share with me the status of the upgrade. We utilized the extst.ibm.com to keep constant communication with one of IBM's strategic alliance partner as our main IM product. However, lately we experienced issues that a number of posts shared above. Such as "cannot see the online status of IBM employees, cannot send messages back and forth between IBM and ACI employees.
Please advise as the upgrade may played a part in the intermittent issues we are having with ST.

We haven't upgraded the service to the IBM Lotus Sametime Gateway yet. We're currently in discussions with Lotus product management to determine if upgrading will address the intermittent awareness issues that some users are experiencing. I'll keep the community updated through this blog.

How long do we need to stay tuned ? As at the moment I have tried the Embedded Client in Notes 8.5 and that one doesn't work
I also tried a stand alone Connect client version 8.0.1 and that doesn't work also.

Chris, on the IBM side we have added the client email address and they can see me, but for some reason I am not seeing them on-line - when they send me a s/t msg I am not receiving. Can you kindly confirm for me what specific settings I need to recheck to ensure that within IBM I can see those that are trying to contact me. I have been using the Sametime browser based connection from the link on the iBM Collaborate web site. I am a BP. I can see all my IBM contacts with their awareness status (active or away or offline)and I can send them message and recieve messages.
But no one in IBM can see if I am online (active) as after they add my id as external the only can see me as offline
I downloaded and intalled the Sametime 8 client. the problem is exatly the same ie all works except no one inside IBM can see my ID online
Do you know what could be the cause. PS I checked other external BP's and they do appear "green" on the IBMers ST screens

I have the same problem as Nadi with the Sametime Connect Client 8.0. I'm a BP and communicate with IBM employees via the Client. I can see the correct status and can send them messages. The only problem I have is that no one from IBM can see my status and as a result no one from IBM can send messages to me initially.

Using ST from my Notes 8.5.1 Client and the chat with some IBM employees works fine and with others (especially with one person) I get this "Network Error SIPP2GW, or the person you are trying to contact is offline.
