IBM’s internal Sametime service upgraded
IBM's internal Sametime instant messaging servers were successfully upgraded to Sametime 8.0.1. This was a significant upgrade in that it aligns IBM with the same Domino-based server code that our customers are running. In addition, the new architecture and infrastructure adds significant capacity that positions us for expanding the service in 2009. Inside IBM, we're a significant user of instant messaging with over 400,000 users with a peak load of over 200,000 concurrent users.
In terms of web conferencing, IBM completed an upgrade to Sametime Web Conferencing 8.0 earlier this year. The service is deployed on IBM's extranet which allows external customers to participate in meetings - as well as employees. In addition, IBM also leverages the same Sametime Unyte hosted software as service (SaaS) as our customers.
We're looking ahead to Sametime 8.5 next year. More information will be available at Lotusphere 2009. I'll be working at the Lotus Symphony kiosk (inside IBM we're aggressively moving to Lotus Symphony) and also assisting with a presentation or two. Hope to see you there!
